Domain Name Hierarchy
Each domain name has a suffix that indicates which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. The top level domain is the highest level domain in the hierarchical Domain Name System such as .com, .net, .info, and others.
A second-level domain (SLD) resides below the top-level domain. For electronicmediadesign.com, electronicmediadesign is the second-level domain of the .com top level domain.
The third level, or sub domain as is commonly referred, is a domain that is part of a larger domain. For example take mail.electronicmediadesign.com where "mail" is the sub domain of "electronicmediadesign".
