Domain Redemption Process
Managing your domain name is an important aspect of running your business. All too often people forget to renew their domain or try to renew it when it is too late. If you do not renew your domain name before it expires, it will fall into the redemption process. Getting your domain name back in the redemption phase can be costly and you run the risk of losing years of work building your web site name.
Domain Name Renewals
Register early, before the expiration date. Electronic Media Design will notify your prior to expiration if your domain is registered through us. The cost of domain name registration is part of the annual web host service provided by Electronic Media Design. However, the Registrar of your domain can be a different company that hosts your website.
Failure to Renew Your Domain Name
If you fail to renew, your registration is interrupted, and then your name servers will be changed by the Registrar. This means your web site will be offline within a few days of that change. You may not notice that it is offline for another few days. If you pay your registrar within 30 days, the site will go back online and may take a few more days to be widely available.
Redemption
After 30 days of your domain name expiration, the domain name enters redemption period. The redemption period is a Domain Registry period of up to 30 days that occurs when a domain name has expired not renewed. The redemption period extends the time available to renew the expired domain name by 30 days. During this 30 day period, the original owner has priority to reclaim the domain through the redemption process from their registrar. The cost to get the domain back is usually higher because it becomes a manual process. If the owner does not claim the domain during this period, the domain is released to the public after the delete phase.
Pending Delete Phase
After the 30-day redemption period there is a 5-day Pending Delete Phase. In this phase, no one can renew the domain nor can it be registered by anyone. After the 5-day Pending Delete Phase the Registry will release the domain name back into the public pool where anyone can register the domain name.
ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) regulates domain registrations. Visit www.internic.net to learn your rights as domain name owner.
Getting Help
Electronic Media Design strongly recommends that you renew your domain before the domain name is placed in redemption lock. Once your domain name is locked, the Domain Name Service, web site, and email services will no longer work.
If you do register with Electronic Media Design, you should always contact Electronic Media Design for help. If you register your own domains, then most issues are handled by your registrar.
Electronic Media Design can host any domain name as long as you can point the DNS to us, but we cannot register every domain. For more more information on domain name, search for domain name related articles on this site.
